Common Questions

GlassNotes is a minimalist Markdown editor for macOS designed to function as an elegant sidebar. Its uniqueness lies in its modern "glassmorphic" design (frosted glass aesthetic), which utilizes native macOS vibrancy effects, and its focus on being unobtrusively available at the edge of your screen without unnecessary distractions.

Yes, absolute privacy is a top priority. Your notes are primarily stored locally on your Mac. You have full control over them and can export or import your entire library in JSON format at any time. If you choose to enable synchronization, it is performed securely via a secured database.

This feature allows you to pin the editor window so it isn't obscured by other running applications (e.g., a browser or an IDE). It is ideal for situations where you are taking notes while watching a tutorial, conducting research, or writing documentation and need to keep the text constantly in view.

The FREE version offers basic writing, folder organization, and local storage. The PRO version unlocks advanced features such as:

  • • Creating Wiki-links (interlinking notes)
  • • Managing deleted items in the Trash (recovery and auto-deletion after 30 days)
  • • Version History for your notes
  • • Dynamic (Smart) folders for automatic organization
  • • And much more

Yes, GlassNotes supports so-called Wiki-links. Simply type [[ in the editor, and the app will offer a list of your existing notes to link. If a note with that name doesn't exist, you can create it right away. This feature is excellent for building a personal knowledge base (Zettelkasten).

The application places great emphasis on efficiency. In the settings, you can define a global keyboard shortcut to create a "Quick Note" from anywhere in the system without having to switch windows using the mouse. The editor itself, naturally, fully supports Markdown syntax for fast formatting.

Dynamic folders are essentially saved filters. Instead of manually moving notes, you set up rules (e.g., "all notes with the tag #project and modified in the last 7 days"), and the application automatically groups these notes into that folder.

Not at all. GlassNotes utilizes a modern continuous auto-save system. Additionally, the app includes a Note History feature, which allows you to browse previous versions of your text and, if necessary, revert to an older version.

In GlassNotes, you can customize every folder to orient yourself immediately within the navigation. The app allows you to assign custom icons from a wide library (based on SF Symbols) and set specific colors for them. These visual elements also subtly reflect into the "glass" background of the editor itself when you are working in them.

No, you don't. If you prefer a clean Dock, you can hide the icon in the settings and control the app solely via the Menu bar. GlassNotes also supports launching automatically at Mac startup, so it is ready for writing immediately after you log in.
